Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies provide students with a comprehensive foundation in communication theory, interpersonal and organizational communication, intercultural competence, and ethical message design. The program is designed to equip graduates to become effective communicators in a variety of contexts—including corporate, non-profit, ministry, educational, and civic environments.

Students will bring together selected work—such as presentations, research projects, communication plans, written materials, and campaigns—and explain the purpose, audience, and thinking behind each project. Paired with a résumé and professional goals, a portfolio helps students demonstrate what they have learned and communicate the value they can bring to employers, graduate programs, and communities.

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies features a 36-credit major, including a core of 24 credits, open electives (6 credits), an internship (3 credits), and a senior Integrated Project (3 credits) offering a choice between a research thesis or an applied project.

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies program will be starting in the fall of 2027.

All four-year Johnson students complete two majors: one in Bible and Theology and one in their chosen field, such as Communication Studies. Transfer students with substantial prior coursework may complete a reduced set of Bible and Theology requirements instead of the major. Learn more about the Bible and Theology curriculum here.
